How VAT & Sales Tax Are Calculated
Master the mathematical mechanics of tax-exclusive pricing, tax-inclusive gross extractions, and shipping considerations.
1. Adding Tax (Tax Exclusive)
Standard in wholesale, B2B contracting, and US retail (see our net-to-gross pricing guide). The quoted price excludes sales tax. VAT is computed by multiplying the discounted taxable subtotal by the tax percentage.
Total = (Subtotal - Discount) + Tax + Shipping
2. Extracting Tax (Tax Inclusive)
Universal in European, British, Australasian, and Asian B2C commerce where advertised shelf prices already incorporate VAT/GST. To isolate the underlying net base, divide the gross amount by 1 plus the tax decimal (read our reverse VAT calculation guide).
Extracted Tax = Gross - Net Base
3. Discounts & Freight Treatment
Promotional codes and discounts directly reduce the taxable base before tax calculation. Under UK HMRC, EU directives, and state tax rules, freight and postage follow the taxable classification of the underlying merchandise.
Tax = Taxable Base × (Rate / 100)
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions regarding international VAT rates, GST increases, discounts, and calculation methods.
Value Added Tax (VAT) and Goods and Services Tax (GST) are multi-stage indirect consumption taxes collected at each link in the supply chain, allowing registered businesses to claim input tax credits. Retail sales taxes (like in the United States) are single-stage levies applied only at the final point of sale to end consumers.
Switzerland enacted new statutory VAT rates effective 1 January 2024 to finance pension reforms (AHV 21). The standard rate increased from 7.7% to 8.1%, the special accommodation rate moved from 3.7% to 3.8%, and the reduced rate rose from 2.5% to 2.6%. Our database has been verified with these official 2024–2026 Swiss rates (detailed in our 2026 Global Rates Guide).
Finland officially raised its general statutory VAT rate from 24% to 25.5% effective 1 September 2024. This change places Finland with the second-highest standard VAT rate in the European Union (after Hungary's 27%). Our calculator automatically reflects this verified rate.
Singapore implemented a two-step GST increase: rising from 7% to 8% in 2023, and reaching the current standard of 9% on 1 January 2024. Our tool defaults Singapore to the 9% GST standard.
In almost all tax jurisdictions, trade discounts, coupons, and percentage markdowns are deducted from the gross purchase price before VAT or sales tax is assessed. Tax is calculated solely on the actual net consideration paid by the buyer.
